What to do if Wireless Network Shows Signal But Won't Connect:

One of the most annoying wifi issues is having a strong signal but there is no connection to the internet.  Unlike some of the wireless issues, like not having the connection or poor wireless signals, when you have well signal strength and all indicators say that it is all ok, and yet you fail to connect to the internet, it becomes very frustrating.

Given below are some of the tips that will help you to solve this issue completely. Some of the possible causes of this problem are discussed in detail.

Check Your Wireless Router

If the problem is with your home network, make sure to log in to the wireless router administration page, if you are not familiar with the connection you can seek the help of router manual. Go to the main page or in a separate page, check whether the connection to the internet is actually up, under the ‘network status’ section.

You can also look at the indicator lights of your router in order to ensure that the connection strength of the internet. Make sure the light on the router blinks or steady, which assures that it is getting the necessary internet connection.

If you see that connection of the internet is not up to the mark, then unplug the modem as well as the router, wait for a couple of minutes and again plug them. If it still creates a problem then you must contact your Internet Service Provider for further help.

Open Your Web Browser

Say for example you are accessing to a wifi hotspot at a hotel or airport and you want to check your mail or other necessary things (e.g. mail), once you get the signal. However, most of the wifi hotspot generally requires you to initially open the browser and view their home page. In that page, they ask you to agree to their terms and conditions before using their service, in some cases, you may be asked to pay a certain amount in order to get access to the service.

Moreover, it holds true whether you are using a Smartphone, laptop or tab to access public wireless network.

Reinputting WEP/WPA Code

There are some operating systems like Windows XP that never warns their users, even if they put the wrong password. Although you may see that your device is showing good signal strength, if you put the wrong password, the router will not communicate with your device properly.

It is then necessary for you to enter the security key, in order to do it, right click on the status bar and then click on disconnect.  If you are accessing a public wifi hotspot ensure that you have entered the correct security code from the provider of the hotspot.

Checking MAC address filtering

Similar issues can be if the router has a MAC address filtering set up. MAC address/ Media Access Control number is required to identify the individual networking hardware.

You can set up router and access points in order to allow certain MAC addresses, which are unique devices so that it gets properly authenticated. Sometimes on a corporate or small business network has filtering set up, in that case, you need to have MAC address of your device's network adapter added to the list of permission.

Try a Different DNS

In order to boost the speed of your internet access you can change your DNS server, this will translate the domain name into real web browser address. This will help you to achieve more connection reliability. Make sure to enter the DNS address manually in the configuration pages of your router.

Thus going through the article will help you to determine the issue related to your network and take action accordingly. If you see that there is a signal but no connection then going through the article will help you to get a solution over it.
